Southern Palms in Diani Beach

It’s hard to believe that well over a month has past since we were able to go to Mombasa for a vacation. Thanks to a generous Christmas gift from one of our supporters we were able to spend 5 days in the sun at a place called the Southern Palms in Diani Beach, on Kenya’s south coast.

We had a great time. Thomas and Rehema made some friends who were visiting from Germany who spoke very little English, but were some of the most friendly people we have ever met. They had children much older than Thomas and Rehema but very welcomingly let them participate in whatever they were doing. Thomas got involved in beach volleyball; we could barely keep Rehema out of the pool. She’s the fish of the family and really enjoys the water. We played a little in the Indian Ocean, made sandcastles on the beach, flew our kite, read books by the pool, played some tennis, worked out in the resort’s gym and ate and ate and ate.

Though it takes about 8 hours to get there by road (and took us about 12 on the way home due to some rain and heavy traffic) it was a welcome relief to the stress that we had been under during Kenya’s post election violence.

Certainly Mombasa is one of Kenya’s most beautiful places. We hadn’t been there for a number of years and this was a real memorable time!
